Salvador Colorado was jogging along 3500 South when he heard panicked screams coming from an apartment building.
Pausing to investigate, Salvador saw a man threatening a woman with a knife. Realizing the urgency of the situation, he decided to act. For his courage and willingness to help someone in need despite clear danger, Salvador was given West Valley City’s Courageous Citizen award. Here’s the full account:
On September 7, 2018, a woman had just returned home to her apartment building at 3063 West 3500 South after visiting her sister and was collecting her things as she was exiting her vehicle. When the woman turned, there was a man, whose face was covered with a bandana, staring her in the face while holding a hunting knife. The man demanded money and her phone or anything of value. The woman did not have anything that the man wanted and in fear for her life, she began screaming. The woman’s screams attracted the attention of a 15 year old boy, Salvador Colorado, who was jogging along 3500 South. Salvador saw the man threatening The woman with a knife, grabbed the suspect from behind and threw him to the ground, then put himself between the suspect and The woman. The suspect got up, thrusted the knife at the boy, then took off running away from the apartments. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Officers were in the area quickly, but no suspect was located.
Thanks to the quick and heroic actions of Salvador, The victim was spared potential injury as well as theft of her property. West Valley City and the West Valley City Police Department would like to extend to Salvador Colorado a most sincere expression of our gratitude for taking quick and heroic actions to help a person in need.
