- Findings from AR that require correction right away (Due 5/10/2019):
- Wellness Policy X.A.12. must reference (or link) to the following policies: C.11. Student Fundraising; VI.E.1: School Food Services General Responsibilities; VIII.A.21: Nutrition and Vending; Administrative Memorandum #26
- Committee formation/invite all stakeholders: This meeting is the start – the meeting was advertised online, and an email address provided for outside comment.
- Inviting/Permitting all stakeholders to participate in the development, implementation, review and update of the wellness policy.
- A tool kit is available that can be made part of startup processes to ensure this happens – it contains a letter to principals, power point presentations, flyers to parents, postings for websites and tweets.
- Identifying wellness policy leadership of one or more LEA and/or school officials who have the authority and responsibility to ensure each school complies with the policy.
- Each School designate one person?
- Informing and updating the public about the content and implementation of the local wellness policy.
- Minutes of meetings can be posted on the Granite Nutrition Website. Anywhere else?
- Include all required components:
- Specific/measurable goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness. LEAs are required to review and consider evidence-based strategies in determining these goals.
- Nutrition guidelines for all foods and beverages available or for sale on the school campus during the school day that are consistent with Federal regulations for:
- School nutrition standards, and
- Smart Snacks in School Nutrition standards
- Policies for other foods and beverages available on the school campus during the school day (classroom parties, snacks brought by parents, or other foods given as incentives)
- Policies for food and beverage marketing that allow marketing and advertising of only those foods and beverages that meet the Smart Snacks in School Nutrition standards.
- Description of public involvement, public updates, policy leadership and evaluation plan. (Triennial evaluation)
- CDC has a school health index to evaluate existing policy. It could be tailored into a simple evaluation form for each school wellness designee to complete annually to measure our progress.
- This can be completed by next meeting.
- A.12. Wellness Policy: does not really contain specific/measurable goals. Does discuss Competitive foods and provides current regulation (differs from VIII.A.21: Nutrition and Vending); briefly discusses fundraisers.
- A.21 Nutrition and Vending should be updated to reflect same smart snack regulations as in X.A.12. Wellness Policy. Also update current fundraising regulations. Incorporate same verbiage through all policies.
- C.1.1.D.10 Student Fundraising: States correct nutrition standards and Utah Admin Code R277-719-5
- Memo #26: Still appropriate although memo is quite old (2006)
- Memo #64: Also aged (1995) – Section 6 needs updating to reflect current policy regarding Meal Charges.
- Action Items:
- Compliance sub-committee: School designee submitted for each school. They will receive information disseminated through email. (Due before 5/10/2019)
- Review School Health Index and create shorter form to send out to meet annual assessment regulation.
- Set next meeting. June 12, 2019 @ 9:00 AM.
- Wellness Policy X.A.12. and VIII.A.21: Nutrition and Vending to reflect current regulations; Send to committee for review; Garett will take to staff meeting May 14, 2019; Revisions will need to go to Board for Approval. Earliest possible meeting will be June 11, 2019.
