Anya Burtis, a College & Career Awareness and Family & Consumer Sciences teacher at Evergreen Junior High, has been named the Utah New Teacher of the Year by the Utah Association for Career & Technical Education.
Using her passion for CTE, Anya instructs with the goal of helping students connect lessons to their personal lives beyond the classroom. She believes that students learn best by “voice and choice.”
A native of Cache Valley, Anya got her bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education from Utah State University before moving to Salt Lake City to teach at Evergreen.
“I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else to teach the courses I love,” she said. “This district is amazing, and the CTE department is a huge help in my growth.”
In addition to creating a learning environment for her students that encourages their ability to reason carefully, she guides and leads the E-team at Evergreen, and is pursuing a master’s degree.
