Granite School District would like to inform parents of Dual Language Immersion programs that are available for all incoming 1st grade students. Dual Language Immersion (DLI) is a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time. Students receive math, science, or social studies instruction in a target language, such as Spanish, French, or Chinese. Because of the teaching strategies used, students learn the concepts and skills for the subject area and develop the ability to read, write, speak, and listen in another language.
The DLI program in Granite School District begins in first grade and students continue to take courses in the target language through graduation, with a goal of college and career readiness in two languages. More information about the district’s DLI programs can be found online at www.graniteschools.org/curriculuminstruction/dual-immersion/.
Parents with students currently in kindergarten who wish to apply to a DLI school during open enrollment can find the application process on the Granite School District website.
The application window will close February 3, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. We will continue to receive applications after the deadline, but those students will be placed on waiting lists according to space available in the schools.
Because of recent boundary changes, Oakwood Elementary’s DLI program is accepting any current kindergarten and 1st grade students for the next school year. There is a separate application for the 2nd grade Chinese DLI program at Oakwood which can be found on the application page on our website.
Please note, if a parent chooses to enroll their child in a DLI school outside of their normal school boundaries, they will need to provide their own transportation to that school.
Parents of native Spanish speaking students are encouraged to join Spanish DLI programs as studies have shown this is the most effective way for students to learn English while also building academic language in Spanish. Other benefits include academic learning in both languages, increased ability to communicate with the Spanish-speaking community, and economic advantages for future careers.
A full list of Dual Language Immersion Schools and any currently scheduled parent meetings can be found on the district’s website.
