Want to get up-to-date news articles on high-interest and diverse topics for students, customized to their reading levels? Newsela will do this for you!
Newsela is a daily news website designed for students and teachers. It provides up-to-date articles on topics including War & Peace, Science, Kids, Money, Law, Health, Arts, and Sports. Each article has been adapted to five different reading levels which the reader can toggle between with a mouse click. This allows an entire class to read an article on the same subject or news item, with each student reading at an individualized reading level. Additionally, most articles are aligned with specific Common Core Anchor Standards for Reading (hover over the light bulb icon to see an applicable anchors.)
Signing up for an account is not necessary simply to access the articles. But with sign up, Newsela also provides teachers with the ability to assign specific articles at specific reading levels to specific students, and it provides comprehension quizzes and writing/annotation abilities for students.
