Highlights from Literacy Night at Olympus Jr. High
Earlier this week Olympus Jr. High hosted a Literacy Night open to all students, parents, and staff in Granite School District. Jennifer Peirce, District Educational Technology Specialist, shared the following snapshots with us from the event.
Five visiting authors were in attendance,
- Shelly Brown (Ghostsitter, Mustaches for Maddie)
- Frank L. Cole (The Afterlife Academy, Potion Masters, The World’s Greatest Adventure Machine)
- Chad Morris (Cragbridge Hall series, Mustaches for Maddie)
- Bobbie Pyron (A Dog’s Way Home, Lucky Strike, A Pup Called Trouble)
- Dan Wells (Mirador series, The Partials Sequence)
as well as representatives from Granite school libraries and Educational Technology staff, Salt Lake County Library System, UEN, and other educational and literacy-promoting organizations.

Upcoming Event: Granite Literacy Night
Olympus Jr. High School is hosting a Literacy Night for Granite School District! All students, parents, staff, and community members of Granite schools are invited to attend.
Upcoming Author Visit: Veronica Roth
Veronica Roth, author of the bestselling young adult novel Divergent and its accompanying dystopian science fiction series, will visit Granger High School in West Valley City on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at 7 P.M. She will discuss her new young adult novel, Carve the Mark, being released this month as the first volume in an all-new epic fantasy/science fiction series.
A ticket is required to attend this event. If you are a student at a junior high school or senior high school in Granite School District interested in attending, please visit your school’s library and ask about tickets. Others outside the district can find ticket details and contact information on the The King’s English Bookshop event page.
Carve the Mark is released on January 17, 2017. Granite students and teachers can place a hold on Carve the Mark right now in Granite’s OverDrive, or ask at your school library to check out a print copy when it is released. Veronica Roth’s other novels are also available in ebook and digital audiobook formats on Granite’s OverDrive.
Author Visit: Jeff Kinney at Kennedy Jr. High

Granite Library Author/Illustrator Event: Matt de la Peña and Christian Robinson
Author Matt de la Peña and illustrator Christian Robinson will be visiting Granite School District to talk about their 2016 Newbery Medal and Caldecott Honor-winning picture book Last Stop on Market Street. The evening event happens March 18, 2016, 7 PM at Granger High School (3580 South 3600 West, West Valley City, UT.)The evening event happens March 18, 2016, 7 PM at Granger High School (3580 South 3600 West, West Valley City, UT.)
Matt de la Peña has authored numerous young adult and middle grade novels, including The Living, The Hunted, We Were Here, and Mexican Whiteboy. Christian Robinson has illustrated many notable and award-winning picture books, including Josephine, Rain!, Gaston, The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade, and Leo: A Ghost Story.

Teacher Spotlight: Brad Butcher, Evergreen Jr. High
Brad Butcher is the Library Media Educational Technology Specialist (LMETS) at Evergreen Jr. High School in Millcreek, Utah. Mr. Butcher fills his library with reading promotions, author visits, and other activities created for and by his students. He has an active Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB); you will hear from several of them in this video. Bringing in national and local authors for school visits he has catalyzed an exciting reading culture in his school. He is also an educational technology wizard, helping and training teachers and students throughout the school in technology tools and resources. Mr. Butcher is an incredible asset to his school and to the team of library and technology specialists throughout the district.
