Utah’s public schools are the beneficiary of 96 percent of all trust lands. Revenue generated from school trust lands is transferred into the Permanent School Fund, growing the endowment for public schools. Income earned from this permanent fund is distributed annually to individual School Community Councils using a per-pupil formula. These School LAND Trust dividends are often the only discretionary funds available to schools. Each School Community Council identifies the critical needs of its school and determines the best use of its School LAND Trust dividend. Programs range from purchasing computers and hiring teachers and classroom aides, to funding college preparatory and reading programs.
